Texas Governor defends Boy Scouts of America

The Washington Post posted an Associated Press article (see here) talking about Texas Governor Rick Perry's new book, "On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For." The article describes Gov. Perry's feelings about the ACLU attacking the Boy Scouts of America. It quotes him as saying of gays he knows, "I believe in valuing their lives like any other, as our God in Heaven does," but, he says discussion of sex has no place in scouting. I couldn't agree more. I guess I have a book to add to my wish list.

We need more organizations that teach our youth civic involvement, personal responsibility, and achievement. Our nation's youth are suffering from a lack of these kinds of institutions. And yet, there are those that see organizations like the BSA as the problem rather than as part of the solution. I guess they would prefer gangs.

I deleted a comment because it contained factual errors and name calling. I won't tolerate either of those in comments on this blog.

So Thad you have not bought a scout shirt recently? How about working with boy scouts? Were you generous with your contribution to the Friends of Scouting, knowing the top scout makes 3 or 4 times what you do?

Take off the rose colored glasses. Scouting is busted.

Scouting is busted? I don't believe it is. Does scouting still teach young men important values and skills? Yes. To say "scouting is busted" just because their leaders make more than I do is like saying other charitable organizations are busted for the same reason. Give to the food bank? Give to United Way? I do.

I don't agree that scouting is busted. I don't wear glasses. Rose colored or otherwise.
