Knowing Me May be a Disadvantage

The two people that I know personally who were running for the State Senate District 23 position, Lamont Peterson and Kent Parry, were eliminated at the Republican nominating convention held Saturday. The two Republican candidates who will face off in the primary are Ron Mortensen and Dan Liljenquist. I've mentioned in a previous post why it will be hard for me to support Dan Liljenquist. I'm fairly sure I don't want Ron Mortensen as my representative in the State Senate. Maybe it's time for me to investigate where Richard Watson, the Democrat, stands on the issues that are important to me. I hope we would all do that, find a candidate that matches your position on the issues that are most important to you and then vote for that candidate. Unfortunately, in Davis County, it appears that most people find a candidate that matches their political party and then vote for them regardless of where they stand on the issues.

For many people, that's not a bad way to go. While I think that people ought to invest enough time and interest to find out about candidates, the obvious fact is that most voters do not consider this to be a valuable use of their time. They expect that the political parties will perform a gatekeeper function and produce candidates that somewhat hew to the party line.

Thus, less interested voters need only know that they pretty much agree with the party philosophy (or practice). If a candidate veers too far from the party mainstream, voters will be disappointed with both the party and the candidate.

Some economists argue that for most voters, the cost-benefit ratio of investing a lot of time to explore candidates isn't worth the time. While I clearly do not feel this way, most American voters clearly do.

What do you have against Liljenquist or Mortensen? They are both good Republicans, and stand on conservative values, I lean more towards Mortensen he has experience at working on the Hill and is extremely effective he also has pledged not to take any special interest money so he will only represent the people. do you know of anyone who has done that? Dan is young and has little experience dealing with politicians and there twisted ways I'm afraid that he will be bought out by leadership
